Harvest on the Terraces
In October the terraces turn the colour of old wine and everyone who lives here is picking. We walk between the rows, help where we are useful and eat very well.

The route, day by day
Day 1Arrive in the rows
Pressmoor, 5 km
We walk the first terrace before supper to see where the grapes hang. The family who hosts us explains the week in three sentences.
Day 2A morning of picking
Lees End, 8 km
We pick for the morning, badly at first and then better, and are fed a large lunch under a fig tree. The afternoon is a slow walk uphill.
Day 3The press
Corvane Upper, 9 km
The hand press is operated by whoever is nearest. The smell is sweet and a little like bread. In the evening the village sets one table down the whole street.
Day 4Terrace walk and a cellar
Stakes, 12 km
A walk along stone walls older than anyone can say, then a cool cellar and a quiet tasting where the winemaker explains what is wrong with last year's wine.
Day 5Last lane
Barrel Lane, 8 km
A short walk down the lane where the barrels are stacked, a long breakfast and a slow goodbye. A shared taxi takes us to the station.
