Concept case: a family manufacturer chooses what to stop making
Concept case. Not a real engagement. No client is named.
A mid-sized manufacturer with five product lines had capacity for three. The owners chose two to grow, one to maintain and two to end.
Situation: five lines, three lines of capacity.
Orders on all five lines grew. Delivery times slipped on all five. Every line had a champion inside the company.
Decision: which lines to grow, keep or end, by the end of the quarter.
The owners and two directors would decide together. The sponsor was the owner.
Work: a fact base of six pages and two options.
We compared lines by what they needed from the plant and what they gave back. Two options were set out, with what each gave up.
Decision: grow two, hold one, end two.
The decision was taken in one session. Notice periods for ending two lines were set with customers.
What changed: delivery times became predictable.
Described qualitatively. This concept does not state figures because none exist.
