Fourteen rooms. One wind.

A small house among the vines, where the day is a slow sequence of light. Choose an hour and see a room of the house at it.

Concept project by Artlogic. Casavel is a fictional hotel: nothing here can be booked.

Time of day. Three hours, three different rooms.

The window is the brightest thing in the room; shadows are long and blue.

Built slowly, opened slowly.

The house is stone, lime plaster and oak, set between two rows of vines at the top of a quiet slope. There are fourteen rooms, one kitchen and one long table.

The wind comes up the slope most afternoons. Doors are left open for it, and the house is arranged so that it passes through.

The stone the house is made of.

Morning, day, evening.

The photograph at the top of the page turns with the hour you choose. Each hour is a different room, and we say which.

Each hour shows a different room. We have not photographed one room three times, so the drawing below shows how the light moves through a single room.

One room, three hours

A section through one room with a window on each side. The light is drawn, not photographed.

Drawing. Illustration of light, not a photograph. Where the sun lands in a room with an east and a west window.

Now drawn: Morning, 07:40.

Three photographs, three rooms

  • A made bed with sage linen under a window with wooden blinds, in cool morning light.
    Morning, 07:40: Lintel Room.

The window is the brightest thing in the room; shadows are long and blue.

    Lintel Room
  • A bright bedroom with a white linen bed, wooden headboard and large windows onto greenery.
    Day, 13:10: Orchard Room.

Light is even and high; the linen reads white and the wood reads pale.

    Orchard Room
  • A bed with white linen in low golden light, a bare pendant bulb above it.
    Evening, 19:30: Terrace Room.

The window goes dark first; lamps and the wall hold the warmth.

Little is scheduled.

See experiences

3 experiences

  1. The long breakfast

Bread from the house oven, eggs, fruit from the orchard, coffee that is allowed to take its time. Served until eleven at the long table.

  2. Walk the rows

A guided walk through the vines with the person who prunes them. About ninety minutes, flat shoes, no hurry.

  3. Lunch in the shade

A plain lunch under the pergola: tomatoes, white beans, cheese, something grilled. We pour wine from the cellar by the glass.

These descriptions are examples. No experience can be booked in this demonstration.

A vineyard hillside at sunset with a farm road and a distant farmhouse.
The slope at the end of the afternoon.

A village, a slope, a road to the cellar.

Locals call it the afternoon breath. It rises about three, drops about seven, and is the reason the vines are healthy and the rooms are cool.
