Process
Five stages. Each one adds a layer to the same drawing. Nothing is redrawn from scratch.
1
Frame
We walk the site with the client and draw the lines that cannot move: the boundary, the fall of the ground, the sun, the view and the structure that fits them. This takes two weeks.
Output: One sheet, 1:200
Same drawing, stage 1 of 5
2
Slabs
Floors and roofs go in. Heights are set to the centimetre. The client sees the building as a stack of horizontal planes and decides how many and how high.
Output: Sections, 1:100
Same drawing, stage 2 of 5
3
Walls
Walls give the rooms their size. Thickness is drawn, not assumed. Openings stay closed until the walls are settled.
Output: Plans and sections, 1:50
Same drawing, stage 3 of 5
4
Openings
Windows, doors and rooflights are cut into the walls. Each one is placed for a view or a ray of light and is tested against the section.
Output: Elevations and openings schedule
Same drawing, stage 4 of 5
5
Life
Furniture, stairs, fittings and dimensions go on last. The drawing is now the building. It is handed to the builder with a set of full-size details.
Output: Detail set, 1:5 and 1:1
Same drawing, stage 5 of 5
What a client receives
- A fixed fee for each stage, agreed before it starts.
- One drawing set that grows with the project.
- A visit to the site every two weeks during construction.
