Employment and equity
Hiring contracts, contractors, and equity that people understand.
We prepare employment and contractor agreements and design and schedules that a new hire can read in one sitting.
Where a rule depends on the country, we say which country we are talking about.
Questions we are often asked
- How big should the option pool be?
- Employee or contractor?
- What happens to unvested equity when someone leaves?
How we usually work
- A look at the team and the plan for hiring.
- Templates and an equity policy.
- A short note for each new hire explaining their offer.
What we do not do here
We do not advise on personal tax. People should take their own advice.
Terms on this page
- Option pool. A share of the company set aside to give to employees as options, which are rights to buy shares later at a fixed price.
- Vesting. Earning equity over time. A common pattern is four years with a one-year cliff, which means nothing is earned before the first year ends.
