The range people quote
Many guides suggest keeping three to six months of spending in cash. It is a rule of thumb. Your own number depends on how steady your income is, who depends on you and what a bad month costs.
Your number
Multiply your monthly spending by the number of months. With spending of 2,200 euros: three months is 6,600 euros and six months is 13,200 euros.
How long to build it
Starting from 2,000 euros and setting aside 600 euros a month with no interest, you would reach 6,600 euros after 8 months (2,000 + 600 x 8 = 6,800, so you pass it during month 8). Reaching 13,200 euros takes 19 months (2,000 + 600 x 19 = 13,400).
